Overview

Principal Engineer for Software Architecture and Modernization focused on leading architecture and modernizing legacy systems while staying hands-on with production-quality implementation.

What you'll do

• Lead software architecture and modernization for legacy applications, including target architecture and migration paths.
• Contribute hands-on to implementations, prototypes, refactoring, code reviews, and production fixes.
• Design domain models, APIs, service contracts, and clear ownership and abstraction boundaries.
• Modernize frameworks and runtimes, including framework upgrades, dependency modernization, and decomposition of tightly coupled code.
• Diagnose and fix correctness, performance, reliability, and recovery issues across code, runtime, databases, and dependencies.
• Improve data access and integration patterns by moving business logic out of database-centric code.
• Raise code quality through testing practices, code reviews, static analysis, dependency management, and validation.

What you'll need

• Substantial experience designing, building, operating, and evolving production backend and distributed systems.
• Hands-on ability to move from architecture into code, configuration, instrumentation, and diagnosis.
• Ability to define service boundaries, domain ownership, migration strategies, and integration patterns for complex environments.
• Expertise tracing difficult production behavior and implementing fixes for concurrency, performance, and recovery.
• Depth in software design and refactoring, including domain modeling, modular design, and incremental refactoring.
• Knowledge of relational databases, SQL behavior, messaging, event consumers, caching, and tradeoffs in legacy separation.
• Strong testing and code-quality discipline across unit, integration, contract, and functional testing.
