Overview
Lead Process-Piping Engineer responsible for engineering and design of Solar Turbine Construction Services products for Oil & Gas projects, including gas compression stations, power generation projects and Balance of Plant systems. The role leads process engineering and mechanical equipment design activities from Basic and FEED through detailed engineering, fabrication, commissioning and technical support.
What you'll do
- Lead Process-Piping design efforts for industrial gas turbine packaging, gas compression and power generation projects, and BOP systems.
- Develop new PFDs, P&IDs, UFDs and Process Safety Diagrams and review engineering deliverables.
- Perform process simulations, mass and heat balances, equipment sizing, control valve sizing, pump sizing and hydraulic checks.
- Prepare and review datasheets and specifications for equipment, instruments and piping.
- Support Process Design Basis, Project Safety Philosophies, control/ESD philosophies, trip logic and Cause & Effect diagrams.
- Conduct inter-discipline checks with layout, piping and electrical teams.
- Participate in cost estimation, material requests, engineering documentation reviews, proposal preparation, technical reports and technical bid evaluations.
- Perform process safety studies, including HAZOP, SIL and PHA, to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
- Lead process engineering design activities for Energy and Industrial projects from Basic and FEED through detailed engineering.
- Ensure technical design delivery, technical governance, quality, coordination and interfaces within a multidisciplinary project team.
- Provide technical support and guidance to mechanical, piping and instrumentation engineers, including virtual shop-floor and commissioning support.
- Collaborate with clients, vendors and regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with project requirements and industry standards.
- Lead process optimization initiatives to improve the efficiency, reliability and sustainability of existing operations.
- Prepare and evaluate bid and purchase specifications for process and clean utility equipment.
- Calculate and organize data and interface with piping, mechanical, instrumentation, electrical, HSE and HVAC disciplines.
- Prepare line lists, valve lists, equipment lists and piping material specifications.
- Perform line sizing, thickness calculations, pressure-drop calculations and equipment sizing calculations.
- Route pipes and model equipment using Autodesk Plant 3D, and prepare MTOs and BOMs from piping 3D models.
- Support continuous improvement of technical knowledge, efficiency, quality and productivity in design activities.
- Oversee and guide the team to ensure productivity, efficiency and quality in daily operations.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary design activities and review deliverables for timely, high-quality delivery.
- Research new materials and competitive products.
- Organize, coordinate and execute the building, testing and analysis of prototypes.
- Lead the selection, sizing, specification and integration of rotating, static, heat-transfer and packaged mechanical equipment for gas compression stations and BOP applications.
- Prepare and review equipment datasheets, technical specifications, purchase requisitions, technical bid evaluations, vendor drawings and equipment general-arrangement documents.
- Review compressor and gas-turbine package interfaces, separators and scrubbers, pressure vessels, process-gas coolers, heat exchangers, pumps, utility skids and auxiliary equipment.
- Coordinate equipment interfaces covering piping connections, nozzle loads, foundations, instruments, electrical loads, controls, access, lifting, maintenance and package battery limits.
- Support vendor clarification, inspection and testing, FAT, installation, mechanical completion, pre-commissioning, commissioning and equipment-related troubleshooting.
- Lead selection, sizing, specification, layout and technical review of rotating, static, heat-transfer and packaged mechanical equipment.
- Review vendor offers and documents for technical compliance, performance, materials, interfaces, inspection, testing, maintainability and documentation completeness.
- Coordinate mechanical equipment interfaces and support fabrication, installation, testing, commissioning and troubleshooting.
- Seek discrepancies and inconsistencies, explain variances, prioritize remedial steps, identify possible causes, quantify costs and risks, break down complex problems and select appropriate analytical tools.
- Deliver feedback, make presentations, write reports, listen to feedback and communicate technical information appropriately.
- Manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups or activities and perform at least 2-3 concurrent activities without reducing productivity.
- Provide technical solutions, maintain current technical and procedural knowledge, apply project standards and help others solve technical problems.
- Coach others on orthographic, isometric and axonometric projections; present complex products graphically; manipulate design objects and advise on design approaches.
- Develop improvement plans, advise on multiple equipment and functionality, train others on advanced tools, monitor FEED design processes, evaluate customer feedback and coordinate resources to control design costs.
- Build three-dimensional models, communicate with professionals about design requirements, test alternative production methods, use automated design tools and assist in building complex product prototypes.
What you'll need
- Minimum of 12-15 years of industry experience in engineering/design execution and associated applications.
- Significant, demonstrated results leading Process-Piping design efforts supporting industrial gas turbine packaging, gas compression and power generation projects, and BOP systems engineering and design.
- Strong background in process simulation, flare system design and hydraulic studies for Oil & Gas or EPC projects.
- Strong knowledge of piping design codes and standards such as ASME B 31.3 and ASME B 31.8.
- Strong knowledge of Smart P&IDs, including administration of pipe material specifications and pipe routing with Smart attributes using Plant 3D or Revit.
- Exposure to process simulations, mass and heat balance using Aspen HYSYS, Flow Master and Simulink.
- Experience with control valve sizing, pump sizing/design and critical hydraulic checks.
- Experience performing process safety studies, including HAZOP, SIL and PHA.
- Experience with mechanical equipment design and package integration for gas compression stations, including rotating equipment, pressure equipment, heat-transfer equipment and utility skids.
- Strong understanding of API/ASME standards for process safety.
- Proficiency in hydraulic and surge analysis for long-distance pipelines.
- Knowledge of pump and heat exchanger design.
- Working experience with 3D design tools: AutoCAD Plant 3D, E3D, AutoPipe and Navisworks Manage.
- Proficiency in equipment datasheets, specifications, requisitions, technical bid evaluations, vendor-document review, equipment layouts, inspection plans and test documentation.
- Knowledge of applicable equipment standards such as API 617, API 616, API 661, ASME Section VIII, API 520 and API 521.
- Bachelor of Mechanical from an accredited Engineering Institute.
- Knowledge of equipment selection, sizing, specification, integration, vendor review, inspection, testing and lifecycle support for gas compression facilities.
- Knowledge of analytical thinking techniques and tools for determining root causes and creating alternative solutions.
- Knowledge of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques.
- Knowledge of effective self-management practices for managing multiple priorities.
- Knowledge of technology and application methods for developing solutions to significant technical challenges.
- Knowledge of computer-aided design and engineering tools and techniques for producing, analyzing, simulating and testing product design drafts.
- Knowledge of product design processes, approaches, tools and techniques.
- Knowledge of product features and the ability to design, build and develop a new product, technology or service from concept through production.
