Senior Backend Engineer, UK

Overview

Senior Backend Engineer for GitLab’s DevSecOps platform. You’ll design, implement, and evolve backend product capabilities while solving complex backend problems and shaping team direction.

What you'll do

• Design and ship moderate to complex backend features with minimal guidance.
• Improve backend quality, reliability, and performance; make architectural trade-offs.
• Define backend standards for style, maintainability, testing, APIs, and operational readiness.
• Mentor associate and intermediate engineers; remove technical blockers via reviews.
• Diagnose and prevent performance/reliability issues and act as a technical owner in incidents.
• Use AI in production engineering work, evaluate effectiveness, and coach others on responsible use.

What you'll need

• Strong command of backend architecture, APIs, data systems, and performance tuning.
• Proficiency in modern backend languages and an understanding of systems programming.
• Experience designing/evolving modular backend boundaries and migration-safe architectures.
• Ability to lead through influence and clear written communication bridging product and technical needs.
• Proven experience building or operating agentic systems in production with reliability-focused strategies.
• Helpful experience in high-throughput distributed systems, concurrency, or profiling.
