Senior Software Engineer - Backend

Overview

Senior Backend Software Engineer to build a greenfield suite of payment infrastructure services in a small, high-autonomy team within Boku’s Innovation department.

What you'll do

• Design and build production-grade services using Java and Spring Boot.
• Implement RESTful/gRPC/MCP and event-driven APIs for payment initiation, callbacks, reconciliation, and settlement.
• Build fault tolerance and resilience (circuit breakers, retries, idempotency, graceful degradation).
• Optimize performance via profiling, load testing, and careful SQL/NoSQL data-access design.
• Develop payout, card processing and FX system components from scratch.
• Contribute React-based frontend components for internal tooling and dashboards when required.

What you'll need

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience with deep Java and Spring Boot ecosystem expertise.
• Experience building and operating high-throughput, high-availability distributed payment or financial services.
• Strong understanding of payment system architecture including idempotency, exactly-once delivery, reconciliation, and settlement flows.
• Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and messaging systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ, or equivalent).
• Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes/EKS, plus CI/CD tooling such as GitHub Actions.
• Experience with PCI DSS-compliant system design and secure coding practices.
• Strong communication skills for work with globally distributed teams and partners.
