Overview
The Senior Staff Software Engineer will provide organization-wide technical leadership for large-scale distributed systems and platform architectures. The role drives scalability, reliability, modernization, engineering excellence, AI-assisted development, developer productivity, and architecture and operational maturity across teams.
What you'll do
- Lead the design and evolution of large-scale distributed systems and platform architectures for long-term scalability and reliability across organizations.
- Define long-term technical strategy and architecture across organizational boundaries, aligning engineering direction with business goals.
- Lead adoption of AI-assisted development and connect AI initiatives to engineering effectiveness and measurable business outcomes.
- Identify high-impact technical opportunities, prioritize complex problems, and drive cross-team initiatives spanning multiple systems and domains.
- Partner with engineering, product, and business leadership on technical priorities, roadmaps, architecture decisions, and strategic initiatives.
- Drive observability, performance, reliability, operational maturity, and systemic risk mitigation across production systems.
- Define technical debt reduction and modernization strategies, including re-platforming roadmaps, while advancing platform capabilities and developer productivity tooling.
- Mentor senior and staff engineers, establish high standards for design, code, operations, and continuous improvement.
- Contribute to technical due diligence for strategic initiatives and partnerships.
What you'll need
- B.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- 6+ years of software engineering experience driving technical strategy across multiple teams or organizations.
- Strong computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and design patterns.
- Deep experience designing large-scale distributed systems or platform architectures, with strong understanding of scalability, reliability, performance, and cost trade-offs.
- Hands-on production experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure, including cloud-native services and security best practices.
Nice to have
- Proven ability to operate in ambiguity and drive execution without direct authority, while aligning senior/staff engineers and leadership across teams.
- Deep observability and reliability engineering experience across logging, metrics, tracing, alerting, incident response, and post-mortem improvements.
- Experience improving engineering productivity through platforms, tooling, processes, and modern delivery practices.
- Forward-looking experience with AI-assisted development and organizational AI strategy, including adoption and measurable engineering outcomes.
- Experience with full-stack/API development and proficiency in one or more of Rust, C#, or JavaScript; familiarity with OAuth 2.0, OIDC, and SAML.
- Strong experience with distributed systems, microservices, Docker, Kubernetes, cloud-native infrastructure, serverless services, managed Kubernetes, and Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, Pulumi, or Bicep.
- Experience with secure coding, threat modeling, vulnerability remediation, CI/CD, progressive deployment, relational and non-relational data stores at scale, and technical due diligence for strategic initiatives.
