Senior Staff Backend Engineer (Service Mesh)

Overview

Senior Staff Backend Engineer responsible for designing Service Mesh and large-scale microservices infrastructure that powers Coupang’s services. The role focuses on scalable, reliable service communication, traffic management, and operational excellence.

What you'll do

• Build Service Mesh components with a platform engineering team.
• Design and implement backend APIs using REST, Hibernate, Java, and Spring Boot.
• Develop infrastructure components using Go.
• Architect workload and service management infrastructure.
• Implement enterprise-wide fine-grained traffic control.
• Secure inter-service communication using mTLS, identity-based authentication, and authorization.
• Investigate critical system issues and address root causes.

What you'll need

• 13+ years of professional software development experience.
• Experience designing traffic management solutions for requests at scale.
• At least 4 years of experience designing and developing large-scale distributed systems.
• Strong development skills in Go, Java, or Python.
• Experience delivering mission-critical systems.
• Cloud computing experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP.

Nice to have

• Strong experience designing and implementing Service Mesh features with Istio or Envoy.
• Deep understanding of virtual networks, route tables, subnets, and gateways.
• Understanding of modern web application architecture and API design patterns for high performance and scale.
• Ability to lead delivery of large-scale services with competing priorities.
