Overview
Senior Staff Software Engineer for Coinbase’s Payments org, defining engineering vision and shaping platform architecture for global money movement and payment reliability.
What you'll do
- Define and drive a multi-quarter technical strategy for Payments across rails, orchestration, and transfers.
- Architect and evolve core Payments platform services for high availability, low latency, and cost efficiency.
- Lead end-to-end design and rollout of large, cross-team initiatives (e.g., new global rails, migrations, resiliency programs).
- Set and enforce technical standards for financial correctness, including idempotency, reconciliation, failure-mode handling, and auditability.
- Partner with FinHub, Payments Risk, Regulatory Platform, and Product on cohesive architectures balancing experience, risk controls, compliance, and unit economics.
- Provide deep technical mentorship to senior/staff engineers and improve system design quality and maintainability.
- Use data and observability to identify platform gaps and drive reliability and efficiency improvements.
- Represent Payments in executive and cross-org forums, communicating tradeoffs and securing buy-in.
What you'll need
- 10+ years building and operating large-scale distributed systems in production.
- Experience designing money-movement architectures (e.g., PSPs, ISO 20022, routing, double-entry, high-volume payments).
- Deep expertise in backend programming (Python, Go, or Java) and cloud-native architecture.
- Proven track record designing highly available, high-performance systems.
- Ability to anticipate scaling bottlenecks and take proactive measures.
- Experience leading cross-functional technical initiatives and mentoring senior engineers.
- Ability to distill complex technical concepts into clear, actionable solutions.
