Senior Staff Software Engineer, Finhub

Overview

As a Senior Staff Software Engineer on Coinbase’s FinHub team, you will define the technical vision for financial infrastructure powering account balances and money movement.

What you'll do

• Define and drive a multi-quarter technical strategy for FinHub’s ledger and money-movement platform.
• Architect unified, reusable primitives across fiat and crypto fund flows (balances, holds, settlements, postings, transfers, and history).
• Lead rearchitecture of distributed financial workflows and state transitions with standards for double-entry accounting, idempotency, invariants, reconciliation, auditability, and safe failure recovery.
• Drive end-to-end design and rollout of large cross-team initiatives with milestones, migration plans, and measurable outcomes.
• Partner with Payments, Product, Finance, Risk, Compliance, and Operations to align platform architecture with customer experience and regulatory obligations.
• Provide deep technical mentorship across senior and staff engineers to improve system design, operational excellence, technical writing, and maintainability.

What you'll need

• 12+ years of software engineering experience building and operating large-scale backend distributed systems in production.
• Deep experience with financial, payments, ledger, banking, trading, or high-consequence transaction systems where correctness and auditability are critical.
• Experience with distributed systems, consistency models, asynchronous workflows, and state machines, plus backend programming in Go, Java, or Python.
• Experience leading multi-quarter technical strategy across multiple engineering teams without direct authority.
• Ability to communicate complex technical tradeoffs and build alignment with exec, engineering, product, finance, and operations stakeholders.
• Ability to utilize generative AI responsibly with human oversight and measurable workflow efficiency, cost, and quality improvements.
