Software Engineer - Java

Overview

Software Engineer (Java) for IMC’s global research platform in Mumbai, working on the compute and data platform that supports quantitative research.

What you'll do

• Design, build, and operate the Java backend of a distributed job scheduling platform.
• Develop gRPC/protobuf APIs used by Python, Java, and C++ clients.
• Build event-driven services on Kafka for job lifecycle tracking and dataset orchestration.
• Work hands-on with Kubernetes for scheduling, queueing, preemption, and multi-cluster placement.
• Instrument, monitor, troubleshoot, and drive root-cause analysis for production performance bottlenecks.
• Support and consult research users in the India office.

What you'll need

• 3+ years of professional Java development.
• Java 17+ and Maven/Gradle; strong grasp of concurrency and JVM performance.
• 2+ years hands-on experience with Kubernetes and Docker.
• Comfort developing with Python.
• Solid understanding of distributed systems fundamentals (state machines, retries/idempotency, event-driven architectures, consistency trade-offs).
• Experience with Kafka or other messaging/streaming systems.
• Strong Linux fundamentals and scripting (bash, Python).
