Job description

Overview

Senior specialist role leading end-to-end payroll operations, compliance and a payroll team for Australia and New Zealand within Genpact's HRO Payroll & Benefits service.

What you'll do

  • Manage end-to-end payroll operations for all employees across Australia and New Zealand, ensuring accurate, timely wage calculations, payments, and deductions, including all statutory and regulatory components.
  • Oversee payroll schedules to hit deadlines consistently, and manage end-to-end termination processing, including final pay, Employment Termination Payments (ETPs), redundancy, leave encashments, and statutory reporting.
  • Administer employee leave entitlements accurately, including annual, personal, long service, parental, and termination-related payouts.
  • Lead day-to-day operational delivery with efficient query management and timely resolution, and support the team on challenging stakeholder interactions and high-priority escalations to other service lines.
  • Ensure end-to-end compliance with Australian payroll legislation (Fair Work Act, National Employment Standards, Modern Awards, Enterprise Agreements, and applicable federal and state regulations) alongside New Zealand requirements.
  • Interpret and apply Modern Awards and Enterprise Agreements accurately: classifications, overtime, penalty rates, allowances, shift loadings, public-holiday payments, and leave entitlements.
  • Manage PAYG withholding, Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting and annual finalisation, Superannuation Guarantee and SuperStream compliance, and payroll tax across states and territories, including registrations, reconciliations, lodgments, and statutory reporting.
  • Monitor and implement legislative and regulatory change (Fair Work, ATO, Superannuation, Wage Theft, Payroll Tax, state obligations), and validate employee and contractor classifications to mitigate misclassification risk.
  • Maintain payroll governance, internal controls, and audit processes; keep records, employee data, and payslips to legislative standards and audit-ready; and coordinate with client auditors and regulatory bodies during audits.
  • Identify and drive compliance measures to minimise risk, and stay abreast of internal policy and external legislation so the advice payroll provides is accurate.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of payroll officers and analysts (8–10+), building a culture of accountability, service excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Set SLAs, KPIs, and quality benchmarks; monitor data, performance, and escalations; and coach the team on metrics, managing performance where needed.
  • Liaise with Quality Coaches on quality-assurance monitoring for consistent performance feedback, and give new team members a strong onboarding experience.
  • Manage cyclical performance reporting, internal and external, with continuous-improvement plans, and support the team on their goals and capability.
  • Manage payroll systems and software, ensuring data integrity and security across all systems and processes.
  • Drive automation, streamlining, and best practice to improve efficiency, and collaborate with client IT and HRIS teams on system upgrades and integrations.
  • Address employee payroll queries promptly, and communicate pay policies and procedures clearly.
  • Partner with HR on compensation, benefits, and employee-relations matters, work with Finance to reconcile payroll accounts and support budgeting and forecasting, and provide payroll insights and reports to senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with other Service Leads on day-to-day requirements and future improvements or projects.
  • Develop payroll policies and procedures aligned with organisational goals, and lead projects across payroll transformation, mergers and acquisitions, or expansion.
  • Keep employees satisfied through transparent, responsive payroll operations.
  • Continuously evaluate salary structure: benchmarking, address compression/legacy ranges, remove unnecessary ranges and improve governance/templates.
  • Maintain and update salary governance documentation in alignment with Payroll; identify pain points and implement efficiencies.
  • Coordinate vendor, procurement, and works council interactions; inform payroll and mobility teams.
  • Ensure adherence to SLAs, internal controls, and SOPs; maintain audit-ready documentation.
  • Conduct regular data audits, resolve discrepancies, and act as control point for escalations.
  • Ensure GDPR-compliant data processing and support audit remediation.
  • Oversee process documentation, template management, ad-hoc process changes and removal of inefficient templates; ensure smooth month-end and contractual operations.
  • Identify automation opportunities and drive initiatives to reduce manual errors.
