Overview
Staff Backend Engineer (EMEA) providing technical leadership for complex, cross-cutting backend initiatives and modular architecture strategy in a remote-first organization.
What you'll do
- Lead technical design and delivery of large backend initiatives spanning multiple teams.
- Drive modular backend/service/data/platform architecture and modernize monolith and legacy systems.
- Define and improve standards for APIs, testing, security, performance, observability, and production readiness.
- Create shared patterns for dependency management, data ownership, eventing, failure isolation, and operational documentation.
- Take part in on-call and incident response, escalate during complex incidents, and turn learnings into improvements.
- Mentor engineers and support technical debt reduction and reusable patterns.
- Lead adoption of AI-assisted/agentic workflows with quality, security, privacy, and operational guardrails.
What you'll need
- Technical leadership record across more than one team or broad product area.
- Deep backend architecture and production experience scaling/governing APIs, services, or platforms.
- Experience modernizing monoliths/legacy backends in production to modular architectures.
- Ability to create alignment via clear written proposals and decision records.
- Product judgment balancing outcomes, delivery speed, reliability, and long-term investment.
- Experience mentoring engineers and shaping standards through review, documentation, and examples.
- Production experience with AI-assisted or agentic engineering workflows and evaluating team adoption.
