Intermediate Backend Engineer

Overview

Intermediate Backend Engineer responsible for taking backend features and improvements from clarification through shipping and follow-up in production.

What you'll do

• Own and ship backend features and improvements with minimal guidance.
• Design and implement maintainable, secure, observable, and performant backend code.
• Build APIs, background jobs, integrations, and bounded service functionality.
• Write and maintain data models, migrations, indexes, and understand query behavior.
• Add and improve automated tests and review others’ code for quality and operational risk.
• Investigate build, test, deployment, and runtime failures and propose improvements.
• Use AI productively in daily work and validate AI outputs against limitations.

What you'll need

• Professional experience building and shipping production backend applications.
• Strong programming, API, database, testing, debugging, and performance fundamentals.
• Experience with Ruby/Rails, Go, or another modern backend language.
• Ability to take a feature from clarification through delivery and follow-up independently.
• Practical judgment across security, reliability, performance, maintainability, and operational risk.
• Strong written communication for a remote, asynchronous environment.
• Practical experience with AI coding tools, including reviewing and correcting generated code.
