Principal Engineer - Backend

Overview

Principal Engineer leads backend architecture for large-scale services, ensuring scalability, resilience, and reliability. You will guide technical decisions, mentor senior engineers, and collaborate across teams to modernize platform capabilities.

What you'll do

• Own end-to-end backend architecture for complex, large-scale systems.
• Make high-impact technical decisions and manage trade-offs across domains and platforms.
• Set engineering standards, best practices, and governance models for teams.
• Lead deep technical design reviews, incident postmortems, and problem investigations.
• Mentor senior engineers in backend squads.
• Partner with product, security, infra, and business teams to align on strategic priorities.
• Drive initiatives across modernization, observability, DevSecOps, and developer productivity.

What you'll need

• 10-18 years of backend engineering experience, including 2+ years in principal/staff roles.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems and microservices for resilient, scalable platforms.
• Cloud-native architecture proficiency with GCP/AWS/Azure.
• Hands-on backend skills including API design, data modeling, and infrastructure-as-code.
• Java (Spring Boot) or similar backend languages (Go, Python, Node.js).
• Database expertise in relational (MySQL/PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (Redis, MongoDB).
• Experience with authentication (OAuth2, OIDC) and event systems (Kafka, GCP PubSub).
• Knowledge of security principles, regulatory compliance, and cost optimization.
