Senior Backend Engineer (Remote)

Overview

Senior Backend Engineer to build, operate, and evolve backend services for the WebRTC and Voice SDK platform in Telnyx’s WebRTC squad.

What you'll do

• Design, build, maintain, and operate backend services supporting WebRTC and Voice SDK products.
• Own backend services including Voice SDK proxy, authentication and token services, push notifications, RTC DNS, and diagnostic logging.
• Improve reliability, scalability, and maintainability of customer-facing backend services.
• Improve connection setup, authentication flows, routing, and service behavior for real-time communication workloads.
• Develop observability using logs, metrics, dashboards, alerts, and operational tooling.
• Diagnose production issues across backend services, networking layers, and client connectivity.
• Improve deployment processes, rollout safety, and production readiness for distributed services.

What you'll need

• Strong professional experience building and operating backend systems in production.
• Strong experience with distributed systems and service-oriented architectures.
• Experience with Elixir or Erlang, or strong backend experience with willingness to ramp up in Elixir.
• Experience building or operating real-time, low-latency, or connection-oriented systems.
• Strong understanding of backend fundamentals including authentication, service communication, session lifecycle, reliability, and failure recovery.
• Experience owning services across design, development, deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and scaling.
• Experience with Kubernetes, containers, CI/CD, and modern production infrastructure.

Nice to have

• Experience with WebRTC, VoIP, voice/video communications, or other real-time communication systems.
• Experience with WebSockets or other persistent connection technologies.
• Experience with push notification infrastructure such as APNs or FCM.
• Experience with DNS, edge routing, service discovery, or globally distributed systems.
• Experience building internal diagnostic, observability, or troubleshooting tools.
• Experience building backend services that support mobile or JavaScript SDKs.
