Senior Engineer (Substation - Main Plant)

Overview

Senior Engineer responsible for high-voltage transmission and distribution substation secondary systems electrical design within the UK&I Energy Transition Team. The role covers detailed engineering delivery, technical oversight, project management, quality assurance and team development.

What you'll do

• Prepare and review complex reports, proposals, presentations and drawing packages.
• Design high-voltage transmission and distribution substation secondary systems, including P&C schematics, wiring diagrams, P&C room layouts and Intelligent Electronic Device selection.
• Conduct protection coordination and develop tripping schemes.
• Take personal responsibility for detailed engineering documentation and lead the engineering effort for projects.
• Provide technical and performance oversight for team members.
• Manage selected projects, project tasks and responsibilities, and design processes to meet agreed budget, quality and timeframe targets.
• Deliver fully documented designs to meet client objectives and Arcadis quality system requirements.
• Develop the technical competency of direct reports and junior team members.
• Apply relevant international and UK standards, UK Codes & Standards, engineering knowledge, techniques and tools.
• Prepare document and drawing packages for the appropriate project design submission stage.
• Conduct internal reviews and quality checks of engineering drawings and design calculations.
• Prepare and register relevant documentation and design reports.
• Lead interdisciplinary coordination and technical issue resolution processes.
• Liaise with other disciplines and ensure requirements are understood.
• Understand project scope and changes in scope.
• Use software packages as required for design and delivery.
• Continue developing technical knowledge and emerging technology through regular training.

What you'll need

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from a recognized University.
• 7+ years’ experience in substation secondary design.
• Experience in CAD documentation to UK Energy standards and other international standards.
• Experience in substation processes from concept stage to construction and As-Builts.
• Excellent English written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent mathematical skills applied in engineering calculations.
• Organizational skills and a proactive approach in project management.
• Ability to lead, with good influencing, motivating and delegating skills.
• Ability to develop complex models in ETAP Software and conduct protection coordination.
• Professional registration with any leading engineering body such as IET UK is preferred.

• Computational design, design algorithms and automation of data manipulation.
• Ability to develop cable thermal rating design using CYMCAP / AMTECH for Low Voltage (LV) systems design.
• Ability to develop complex earthing and induction models in CDEGS earthing system software.
• Ability to develop maintenance strategies and procedures, commissioning plans and documentation.
• 2+ years’ experience in design & drafting electrical infrastructure in the UK.
• General familiarity with the electricity supply industry and electricity transmission and distribution practices.
• Knowledge of drafting and BIM, how to define BIM outcomes, BIM processes, how to coordinate a BIM project within the 3D environment and how to apply design to the models they produce.
• Computational design, design algorithms and automation of data manipulation.
