Overview
Senior staff electrical design engineering role in the R&D department focused on designing, maintaining and improving hardware for an existing medical product used in surgeries. The role covers requirements engineering, early-stage concept development, hands-on proof-of-concept and prototype development, mentoring team members and technical leadership of projects.
What you'll do
- Lead projects and/or product lineups from a technical point of view, including work beyond electrical engineering.
- Partner with product management, marketing and clinical stakeholders to translate customer needs and clinical requirements into system and electrical requirements during early-stage concept development.
- Drive ideation and concept generation for new products and/or features, assessing technical feasibility and technology fit ahead of formal program commitment.
- Support requirements engineering, including authoring and decomposing system-level requirements into electrical requirements and maintaining traceability through the design process.
- Contribute to technology scouting and early feasibility assessment for emerging sensing, energy-delivery or interventional technologies relevant to peripheral vascular applications.
- Build proof-of-concept and prototype electronics to validate concepts, technologies or architectures before hand-off to formal new product development programs.
- Liaise with customers for continued feedback and input of requirements throughout development.
- Create schematics, review layouts, BOMs and Gerber files, and create testing plans for designs.
- Collaborate with hardware, software and design engineers to agree system designs, drivers, algorithms, firmware and protocols.
- Optimize PCB and flex-circuit designs for density, cost, thermal issues and other factors.
- Simulate, test and troubleshoot designs, including bench testing and debugging using test equipment.
- Develop appropriate test hardware and informal and formal procedures to prove correct hardware operation.
- Apply hands-on knowledge of oscilloscopes, signal generators, vector network analysers and spectrum analysers, among other test equipment.
- Identify root causes of issues, determine potential solutions and evaluate them against requirements.
- Review and approve manufacturing documents for PCBA.
- Handle component obsolescence in multiple Stryker products.
- Participate in task planning and estimating activities.
- Document work according to organization quality standards.
- Follow company standards for code development and quality processes and comply with quality management system procedures.
- Ensure the integrity and security of patient health information, company intellectual property and confidential data.
- Work with cross-functional teams located across the globe while being a good team player with a high level of commitment and responsibility.
What you'll need
- 12-14 years of experience, preferably in medical or safety-critical product development.
- Bachelor of Technology in Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication or Electrical Engineering, or a Masters in a related discipline.
- Excellent electrical/electronic hardware engineering background in embedded systems.
- Experience with embedded product design and interfacing of motor/motion control systems, DSP, FPGA and microcontroller systems.
- Experience with power electronics and control systems.
- Experience in mixed-signal board designs for embedded systems.
- Strong technical knowledge and hands-on expertise in circuit/schematic design, part design and PCB layout, preferably using Altium, Cadence OrCAD or Allegro tools.
- Knowledge of EMI/EMC testing and ability to debug and troubleshoot onboard electronic circuits using test tools.
- Knowledge of board bring-up, testing and debugging.
- Hands-on experience with lab equipment including DMMs, programmable power supplies and loads, logic analysers, DSO/MSO, spectrum analysers and vector network analysers.
- Experience testing complex electrical and electromechanical embedded systems.
- Demonstrated documentation skills and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Good attention to detail, self-motivation and effectiveness in a team environment with multiple responsibilities.
Nice to have
- Knowledge of miniature pressure pumps, flow control valves, flow meters and pressure transducers.
- Experience with closed-loop pressure/flow control for pump and valve systems.
- Experience with signal conditioning for low-level transducer outputs.
- Awareness of fail-safe/over-pressure protection design for patient-connected fluid paths.
- Working knowledge of embedded firmware in C/C++ sufficient to collaborate across the hardware/firmware boundary.
- Good knowledge of medical regulatory standards and quality processes.
- Effective interpersonal communication skills.
- Highly developed analysis and problem-solving skills.
