Software Development Engineer II -(Backend)

Overview

Software Development Engineer II (Backend) role focused on building and operating backend-heavy full-stack services for Expedia’s Modern Checkout platform.

What you'll do

• Design, build, and operate backend-heavy full-stack services for Modern Checkout.
• Own problems end to end across the stack, including low-level design, APIs, data models, testing, and production support.
• Develop and evolve microservices and platform components in a cloud-native environment.
• Implement resilient, observable, high-performance tier-zero checkout services and contribute to CI/CD and automated testing.
• Collaborate to decompose legacy monoliths into a unified architecture.
• Use AI-assisted development tools and integrate AI/ML-enabled solutions safely in production.

What you'll need

• 2+ years of relevant professional experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field (or equivalent professional experience).
• Ownership across the full development lifecycle in a cloud environment, including production support.
• Strong coding, problem-solving, and analytical skills, including data structures, algorithms, and complexity fundamentals.
• Ability to build services using languages such as Kotlin, Java, or C#/.NET.

Nice to have

• Experience with AWS microservices/service-oriented architectures.
• Experience integrating caches (e.g., Redis), NoSQL (e.g., DynamoDB), and streaming/messaging (e.g., Kinesis).
• Track record delivering and operating high-availability, high-throughput tier-zero/mission-critical services.
• Hands-on experience with JavaScript and React, and with REST or GraphQL.
• Experience applying AI/ML concepts and AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code).
